Artist in Residence

Through our Artist in Residence program, musicians from around the world explore and use our collection in the creation of new works. NMC’s vision is to become a national catalyst for discovery, innovation, and renewal through music.

Since moving to NMC’s new facility, Studio Bell, the program has welcomed jazz artist Quinsin Nachoff, whose album FLUX was nominated for a 2016 JUNO Award; singer-songwriter Luke Doucet; Toronto-based composer and vocal artist Jeremy Dutcher; Vancouver indie-pop act Rococode; multidisciplinary artist, drummer and filmmaker Lisa Lipton; impossible instrument-makers Joshua Van Tassel and James Bunton; and a collaborative project between Kathryn Calder and Woodpigeon (aka Mark Andrew Hamilton) called FRONTPERSON.

Previous participants of the program include: singer-songwriter Basia Bulat, dark folk act Timber Timbre; Edmonton synth-enthusiasts Shout Out Out Out Out; along with collaborative works between Montreal’s Kid Koala and noted Beastie Boys associate Money Mark. “Somebody That I Used to Know” hitmaker Gotye is also an alumnus of the residency program with samples from the collection to appear on his next album. NMC’s most recent Master in Residence was celebrated producer, engineer, and musician Daniel Lanois.

The National Music Centre’s Artist in Residence program is generously supported by Bell Media.
