Jim Brenan established himself as a top-notch performer and educator in the North American jazz community before accepting the position of Coordinator of Jazz Studies at The School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Auckland where he wrote and administered New Zealand’s first undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies. Currently he is the Chair of the department of Theatre, Speech and Music Performance at Mount Royal University.
This show will be the release party for Brenan's third album as band leader, titled January. Featuring Chris Andrew on piano, Rubim DeToledo on bass and from Dana Hall on drums, the album was recorded in one day on November 11, 2011.
This performance will feature Jon McCaslin on drums.
RBC SUMMIT JAZZ SERIES:
With a focus on the development of emerging and established artists, the RBC Summit Jazz Series will enrich and energize the city's musical environment by engaging our most active, creative, and interesting improvising musicians. This series will provide showcase opportunities for creative jazz musicians as well as a reciprocal mentorship component between young emerging musicians, established local musicians and visiting professional special guests. A scholarship will also be awarded to recognize one musician per year who is at an early stage in their artistic career and development, but are dedicated to pursuing a professional career as a jazz musician. This scholarship will be designated to provide funding towards further education, research, training, or practice. The individual will also recognized through a performance opportunity as a part of the RBC Summit Jazz Series.
