552 students. 11 performances. One great cause: music education!

I’m really honoured that I got to play a part in making last Monday such an epic night for Calgary youth and attendees of Listening to Our City, a kick-off the many JUNO events happening in Calgary this month. All ticket sales and silent auction proceeds from this event went to MusiCounts. MusiCounts is Canada’s music education charity associated with The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). Their mission is to ensure children have access to music programs through their schools and communities. Since 1997, MusiCounts has awarded over $9 million in support of music education.

Listening to Our City was an opportunity to celebrate the amazing youth talent in Calgary for the 2016 JUNOS and acknowledge the work from organizations such as the Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School Division, Mount Royal Conservatory, Calgary Stampede, the National Music Centre (of course!), and not to mention the passion of the music teachers who work daily to ensure students have access to music education.

The event featured performances by:

Drummers, dancers and singers of Holy Spirit, St. Timothy, Bishop Grandin, St. Stephen Schools, and First Nations elders

Langevin World Drum Club

Calgary Boys’ Choir

MRU String and Piano Trio

The Young CanadiansCalgary Stampede Showband

JazzYYC Youth Lab Band

Maddison Krebs

Kate Stevens

The Red Cards

Alberta International Band Festival (AIBF) Honour Band

A truly amazing finale performance by Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, accompanied by the Bishop Carroll High School Choir and Young Canadians.

The night ended with the AIBF Honour Band, Stampede Showband, and the night’s performers to the stage joining the choir and Michael to perform “Firecracker”.

The buzz leaving the show was not just from the kazoos (so graciously provided by the JUNOS Host Committee), but from the energy and excitement of the night.

In case you missed it, Playing Our City composition debuted at the Listening to Our City event. Check out JUNO award-winning composer, Allen Gordon Bell, guest conductors from the CPO and Calgarians at the Central Public Library and Genesis Centre simultaneously performed the piece by “playing” their surroundings including books, water bottles, voices, and feet.
