Music streaming numbers now count toward Canada’s Gold/Platinum certifications

September 19, 2016

It’s kind of old news at this point that the music industry is perpetually, frantically attempting to figure out a model that could restore itself to the money-maker it used to be pre-Napster. And that means many aspects of it are changing every day, trying to catch up to things like online streaming which, for better or worse, is the consumption model we’re currently saddled with. Which is why Music Canada has officially begun to count streaming numbers when it comes to their Gold/Platinum certification program.

The move comes about seven months after the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) modernized their own Gold & Platinum program. At Canadian Country Music Week in London, ON earlier this month, musicians Brett Kissel and Chris Lane snagged the first Single Award plaques before the Canadian Country Music Association Awards. That award combines on-demand audio streams from subscription services with digital download and CD sales. A count of 150 streams will equal 1 unit toward certification, Music Canada says. But they still aren’t counting YouTube and VEVO videos.

“Today’s announcement signifies a pivotal moment in Canada’s evolving digital music marketplace,” said Graham Henderson, President & CEO of Music Canada, in a statement. “By accepting on-demand streams for track certifications, Music Canada can continue to acknowledge the success of Canadian and international artists, as well as the subscription-based streaming platforms currently thriving in our market.”

The announcement was coupled with the announcement of new bilingual branding for the program as well, which you can check out here.
