We were very saddened to hear of the passing of a dear friend and long-time supporter of the National Music Centre (NMC). Through the arts, Vera Swanson contributed so much in her lifetime to building community and civic pride in Calgary, and was one of the primary driving forces behind the inception and creation of the Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts, now known as “Arts Commons.” Within the Jack Singer Concert Hall at Arts Common lives the Carthy Organ, a musical jewel of great importance in the evolution of NMC. Vera was also a musical jewel of great importance to us and it was a privilege for all of us when she attended the Grand Opening of Studio Bell in July 2016 as a guest of honour. What an amazing legacy as part of long life that was well lived. Thank you, Vera, for contributing so much to the Calgary arts community, and to music in particular. We will miss—but never forget—your passion, your can-do attitude, and your commitment to excellence.
